It has come to our attention that there is an apparent misunderstanding within the Cricket Equipment industry on whether the protective equipment they supply is covered by the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (EU) 2016/425 (PPE), even beyond EU Exit Transition.
Therefore, the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) and Hertfordshire Trading Standards (their Primary Authority Partner) wish to make you aware of the legal position.
Personal protective equipment worn in cricket, such as leg pads, gloves, body protection and helmets, etc. does indeed fall within scope of the PPE Regulation and is classified as Category II PPE. This means that product needs to be conformity assessed by an independent body (design and performance) in line with the Category II rules detailed within the
Regulation.
There are a number of legal obligations and responsibilities placed upon all economic operators within the supply chain toensure that PPE placed on, and made available to the market, meets the essential safety requirements of the Regulation.
Products also need to be appropriately labelled including the CE mark (or relevant UKCA/UKNI mark in line with the new requirements coming in from EU Exit on 1st January 2021) and be accompanied by the required documentation, such as a Declaration of Conformity and Instructions for Use in a language likely to be understood by a wearer. If you supply protective cricket equipment, whether you are a manufacturer or brand owner, Importer or Retailer (distributer), you must be aware of the legal obligations applicable to your role in the supply chain and ensure you comply with the Regulation.
